Ashlen Grubbs is a sophomore cheerleader who enjoys reading, writing, and making people laugh. “I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we will never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we came from, we can still choose where we go from there.” –Stephen Chbosky

Every school is different. That’s a given. So what makes our school special? Surely LCHS isn’t just another high school movie doused in cliques and terrible teen drama. So what sets our school apart? How can someone new survive here? Freshman, newbies, or students who just haven’t gotten a handle on how things work yet, here is a survival guide just for you.

1. The Hallway of Doom.

This year, many classes have moved downstairs, clogging the 100 hallway with several classes that are overflowing with students. This hallway includes all the classes from Mr. Cruse and Mrs. Blackwell’s down to Mr. Caven’s. As soon as the bell rings the hall floods with students, shoulder to shoulder. If you aren’t coming or going to a class in the 100 hallway please, I beg you to avoid this hallway. Sometimes taking the stairs really is faster. This is one of those times.

2. You matter. Don’t worry about everyone else.

According to Lexi Boyce, who moved here about two months ago from Missouri, “Everyone was kind of indifferent when I moved here. Like it wasn’t a big deal.”

After these 4 years are over, the only people who are going to see you again are the ones you actively seek out.  Don’t be afraid to be who you are because there are people just like you who will find you and befriend you.

3. The Bird Gang(s?)

When asked if LCHS was socially separated, Jessika Shanks responded, “There are cliques in this school, but they are very open to being a part of anything they want to, like people double up on cliques because everyone is friends with everyone.”

LCHS is such a small school, that everyone knows everyone. Let’s face it, most of our parents or grandparents knew each other way back in the day. Or maybe you just moved here and realized it only took two hours for everyone to have your name in their mouth. Our whole school is open to one another. All you have to do is put yourself out there. Only you determine your friends.

4. Sporty sports

Larue county high school has a long list of clubs from National Honors Society, to EARTH club, to 4-H. Our school also offers countless sports. Many students are reluctant to join new clubs and sports because of fear of not being good or fitting in. But once a member of many sports and activities at LCHS, it becomes less of an after-school activity and more of a part-time family. Upper classmen are always looking for ways to help the new members improve for the better for the team. Furthermore, underclassmen are frequently active players in sports. Our coaches put in the best players, regardless of age. Don’t be afraid to try out for a new club or sport here. The teams here are a family. Will you join?

5. Teachers are friends, not food

You do not need to constantly haggle your teachers. Your teachers do not hate you, no matter how much you think they do. In fact, teachers are regular human beings with lives outside of school that cause them stress. The teachers at LCHS are actually very laid back; if you aren’t rude to them, they’re not going to be rude to you. All of the teachers here work for more than just a paycheck. So, remember that teachers are going to be your friends, as much as you are theirs. Maybe just don’t follow them on Twitter yet.

Larue County High School is not just a place of education and projects. It is a place for having fun and forging friendships. It’s a place we eat, play, and grow. So build bonds. Play sports you might be terrible at. Eat an entire box of cosmic brownies. Hang out at football games. Let high school be fun. School is more than just survival.
