There are over seven million couples that are in a long distance relationship. That’s fourteen to fifteen million individuals who engage in such a relationship. When being apart, it makes holidays very hard to celebrate. But that doesn’t make it impossible. The next holiday that is coming up is Valentine’s Day, and there are multiple ways to celebrate if you cannot be with your significant other.
The most common way to commemorate Valentine’s Day is having flowers or a teddy bear delivered to your partner. Go beyond this cliché idea and send them something much more personal or heartfelt. Send them a pair of pajamas or one of your own personal items. Customize the box, send it to their house or work and call them as they open your gift. The thoughtfulness of it all will make them incredibly happy.

Scheduling a Skype call is another way to celebrate the day of love. Granted, most couples already call or Skype every day; however, being the first voice your partner hears can make their day even better. Letting them know how much they mean to you can brighten their mood. You can discuss all of the good times you’ve had, or even share childhood memories.

An e-date can work just as well as an actual date. Video call one another, light some candles, order your favorite cuisine, and celebrate that way. “[My boyfriend and I] watch movies and play video games,” says Emma Whitlock, who is a high school senior at LaRue County High School and is also in a long distance relationship. So, after you’ve shared your favorite meal together, you can settle down and play video games or watch movies.

While long distance relationships have certain limitations, they shouldn’t stop you from celebrating Valentine’s Day. Being so far away only shows that love knows no distance, so why not express your love for one another?
