Here I am feeling like a normal 18-year-old. After a long day of school, I come home and lay down feeling exhausted from the day I just had. Slowly I started to drift away into my dreams and all of a sudden I just woken up by a whaling noise come from my 3-month old son. “time for him to eat I thought” as I got up to make his bottle. I remember I’m not like your average 18-year-old. It’s not about me anymore it’s about what’s best for my son. While people my age are going out with friend’s I’m home doing my best to be a good mom. No one could have prepared me for this in my life was going to be completely different from here on out.
There are so many stereotypical things that are said about teen moms. when there is a teenage mom people still think about how you “messed up your life” but in reality a baby is a blessing and more people need to realize that. Even though there are many statistics out there that are down grading to teen moms everywhere. Although 75% of teen pregnancies are unplanned when it comes to teens the little bundle of joy that you get out of it is so worth it. In 2014, almost 250,000 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 24.2 per 1,000 women in this age group. This is another historic low, and a drop of 9% from 2013. Birth rates fell 11% for women aged 15–17 years, and 7% for women aged 18–19 years. While reasons for the declines are not clear, teens seem to be less sexually active, and more of those who are sexually active seem to be using birth control than in previous years.
Foremost important things that you need to know when being a teen mom is never let anyone decide what you need to do, don’t let them make your decisions for you. This will only cause high level stress and questions on what to do. Do what is needed for you and your child. Don’t worry what everyone else has to say. Sure advice is always good, let’s face it you’re a teen mom and I’m sure you could use all the help that you can get because it’s not easy. Everything that you do you have to think about your kid and what’s best for them. It’s not about you anymore and I feel that’s one of the hardest things to understand about becoming a teen mom.
Last but not least Fears about the future are common among new mothers—and pregnant teens too. Even before the birth, they may begin to feel isolated from their peers, and frustrated by the many restrictions that pregnancy imposes. While they’re lying on an examining table at the doctor’s or attending a Lamaze class, their friends are out partying and having fun. “A great deal of envy and resentment often emerges,” many teen moms feel left out and it can cause depression with certain individuals. Like before while all your friends are going out and having fun you are staying home and doing things a 30-year-old would be doing. But the love for your child never stops but you can start showing signs of postpartum depression and if this happens you need to talk to your doctor immediately. This is real and you don’t want anything to happen to your new born baby or you.
So in conclusion being a teen parent is not easy its one the hardest jobs in the world whether your 18 or 30. There will be critics but that’s ok. The only thing that teen moms don’t understand is they need to stop worrying about how they look socially and worry about them and their baby.
