LCHS Chess Club

Moving Pawns, Moving People

The LCHS Chess club was started late this year by Jacob Rutledge. The club is a “re-birth” of the chess club that the High School had a few years back. It is currently hosted by Mrs. Litton in her classroom after school on Wednesdays. Ironically, Mrs. Litton herself does not know how to play chess, but for those of us in the chess club, we’re hoping to teach the teacher soon. The chess club is non-competitive, aside from a few tournaments we have organized within the club.

The chess club has a good mix of students from all grade levels. One senior member, John Uthoff says, “Although playing chess is intense, it gives me a good break from the stress of school and allows me to do a fun activity and hang out with good friends.” John also said that chess is fun for him because “It’s something that I’m good at and it gives me sense of pride and accomplishment when I win.” Although John rarely loses, he evaluates his game after a loss and learns from it. In fact, chess is one of the few activities that stimulate neuron growth in your brain as well as improve memory and problem-solving skills.

There is about 15 people who attend each meeting, making the chess club the most popular student-led club at LCHS. But the chess club would like to see itself grow, and if you’re interested, all you have to do to join is show up! There is no cost involved and you do not need to know how to play. If you would like to bring a chess board, you’re more than welcome. So come on down, meet new people, play some chess, and most of all have some fun!
