Friends are there through it all: the good, bad, and horrible times. Having someone close can mean the world, but what if that someone lived miles apart? Even though there is a distance between the relationship, doesn’t mean it has to end. Jake Chandler from Michigan, one of my close friends, respond by saying, “If you knew someone in person but they move farther away, you’ll be able to communicate with them as if they’re really with you. Even if not in person. We have the technology to share photos, text, and call one another.” The opportunities that can be used to communicate with one another will only make it easier to communicate. There are some times where it can be difficult to talk to one another, and friendships don’t always last forever. Three ways to having a better relationship when miles apart are: Communicate, take the time, forgive and forget.

Having a friend who lives farther away can be difficult. Communication is the first step to keeping the friendship between two friends going. Communicating can be difficult at times when someone isn’t close or behind a screen, but having a conversation with them that the can be relatable to the two can help. According to Gabriela Chavez from Oregon states, “In a society where people are judgmental, there are others you can connect with. It’s like a different bond, though it’s through a screen it definitely makes a difference.” Online friendships can also be easier than having friends due to many teenagers having social anxiety. LaNina Jones, a Larue County Creative Writing student, also states, “Having online friends can be easier to talk to rather than having real life friends which can be more difficult.

It can be difficult trying to keep up with school work and talking to friends online. Take time to communicate, even if it’s not every day. Select a time which will be best. Find new topics to discuss during this time such as the weather, making up a story, create a game, make up words for other words so no one else can understand. There are a lot of ideas to discuss with someone, even if they don’t necessarily make any sense.

Finally, the last way to having a better relationship with someone miles away is never forgetting to apologize or forgive. Fights will occur during this time apart due to lack of communication, arguments over topics, someone gets offended, etc. And sometimes we forget to let someone know what’s going on that we couldn’t be there for them or we couldn’t be there for a while. With the world around us, it can be difficult to keep in contact with friends. Apologize, the only person who can read another person’s mind is themselves. And whether it’s the friend making the apologies or yourself, forgiveness is the best gift in return.

Nobody likes to lose friends. We lack in time, communication, forgiveness and being apologetic. we’re imperfect humans who get caught up in life and ignore the ones who treasure their friendship.
